The Mistier Side of the Misty Mists

It is said that you should play WoW in a cyclical manner, a.k.a. take a break from it sometime and then come back refreshed. I am notoriously bad at doing just that, even though my guild have farmed Mythic HFC for what feels like forever, and the alpha is quiet. I work on my Patreon UI, collect transmog, level some new alts, collect garrison gold on the max-level alts, and generally mess around on the Alpha. Recently I have been reflecting on the new abilities and traits in Legion, and can’t help but feel it needs some iteration on name choice.

“I’ve heard you like mists, so I put some more mists in your mists”
– Blizzard, Legion alpha.

No okay, they haven’t said that (with words, but they think it, I just know it), but let’s just say that Mistweavers’ mist have been buffed with 400% in Legion. And I don’t talk about spell strength here, I’m talking about the myriad of new “mist” spells, traits and talents we have. While I think it is fantastic with mist, there comes a point when you’re up to your neck with mist that you can’t tell the spells and traits apart anymore. E v e r y t h i n g has the word “mist” in it, it feels like. Don’t believe me? Have a look at the following spells:

  • Soothing Mist
  • Renewing Mist
  • Enveloping Mist
  • Mistwalk
  • Mist Wrap
  • The Mists of Sheilun
  • Mists of Wisdom
  • Shroud of Mist
  • Coalescing Mist
  • Dancing Mists
  • Way of the Mistweaver
  • Mists of Life
  • Essence of Mists
  • Surge of Mist
  • Ancient Mistweaver Arts
  • Dome of Mist

And that’s even after getting rid of few of the old mist spells, such as Surging Mist, Pool of Mists, and Jade Mists. Have I missed anything!?

Thing is, we’ve arrived at a point where it is troublesome to keep all the names apart because everything becomes just a big blend of MIST. Yes, yes, some are abilities, some are talents, traits and such. It is still difficult to keep them apart. I would even go so far as to say that it is pedagogically disadvantageous to have so many “mist”-named abilities.

It has got me thinking about the old description of Mistweavers. Here it is, in case you’ve forgotten:

A healer who mixes traditional herbal medicine with Pandaren martial arts.

And to compare, the new description of Mistweavers:

Mistweavers are unique among those who heal. The energies they channel are mysterious, oftentimes misunderstood by commoners—who rarely travel beyond the borders of their homelands—as some form of folk medicine. But those who weave the mists wield the power of life’s essence, using a mixture of preventative and restorative spells to mend their allies’ wounds. The inner tranquility that guides mistweavers allows them to sustain their healing for long periods of time, and gives them the strength to care for multiple injured allies.

The difference is that the focus have gone from “herbal medicine” and “martial arts” to “weave the mists” and “the power of life’s essence”, with a focus on the mysterious side. It is a more appropriate and fitting description of what our spec is and what we do, but in the process we’ve lost the “herbal medicine” part. We’ve seen that in our toolkit as well; we’ve lost all our brew abilities (fortifying, nimble) and we’re down to one baseline tea ability (mana tea being a talent now).

While I don’t mind having Brewmasters hog all the brew abilities, I would actually want to introduce a little more herbal medicine for Mistweavers again. And I don’t necessarily talk about new abilities (though that would be awesome as well); just having some of the existing abilities renamed so that we can actually keep them apart. Sheilun’s talent tree is the biggest culprit in the drama – why not rename some of the traits to be tea/herbal-based instead?

As you might have guessed, I have already thought of a few names. Here are some suggestions: Tea Infusion, Herbal Decoction, Fume Shroud, Matcha Remedy, Ceremonial Tea Effusion, Medicinal Concotion, Thundering Tea Injection, Way of the Tea, Herbal Breeze, Fuming Jade Tea, Spiritual Medicine, Herbal Balm, Essence of Tea, Tea Leaf Therapy, Cure of the Jade Serpent, Green Tea Healing, Remedial Jade, etc. etc.

I could probably think of a few more names, but they would have a higher dosage of quirkiness (Keep Calm Tea is a personal favourite), so I’ll stop there for now. But you get the gist! I think the herbal medicine/tea concept would play well with the Mistweaver fantasy, even the new one. So why not try for some diversion in name choice? Yeah, I’m looking at you Blizzard.

Think about it.
Think about it.
