Artifact Traits and Feedback

Datamining has reached the Artifacts talent tree, with all the so-far datamined traits. Fair warning though, this is probably an early sketch of the traits and once it is launched, we will most likely see something entirely different. I have no illusions that the final version will look anything like this, but it does give us an inkling of where the developers are going with the spec. And no one can stop me from speculating and… feedbacking!

An interpretation of the Artifact tree by MMO.

PvP and Talents in Legion

Pvp in legionAn easily overlooked aspect of the recent Legion datamine is the new PvP talent tree! I mean sure, who does PvP anyway? I have only dabbled in it from time to time, but never anything serious. So why should we care…?

In fact, in Legion the whole PvP system will be reworked, pretty much from the ground up. The new philosophy is the reduce the significance of gear and instead emphasize talent choice and skill. The Developers have reworked the system so that they have superior tools to balance class and spec against each other in a way they never could before. Oh and, there will be new epic rewards, such as Artifact transmogs! If I’m not mistaken, the Serpent version of Sheilun will be tied to the PvP system somehow. That’s enough to make me consider trying PvP. So let’s go through what we know so far, shall we?

Quick Facts

  • Players are given a separate PvP level, called Honor level. Max level is 50.
  • To gain levels and unlock talents in the PvP talent tree, players must gain Honor, which works more like experience in Legion.
  • The more Honor levels a player gain, the more choice is unlocked in in the PvP talent tree.
  • Players can “consume” their Honor levels to get a Prestige Rank. Higher prestige ranks grant cosmetic awards, such as Artifact transmog, titles, character portraits, mounts etc.
  • Once Honor levels are consumed for Prestige, the player goes back to Honor level 1, giving the player the opportunity to gain Honor levels again, and reach for another Prestige rank.
  • PvP in Legion will be much more about talent choice than gear.
  • There is no PvP specific gear: no resilience, no PvP power or gear with secondary PvP item level.
  • You can enter PvP with any type of gear; your stats will be based on your specialization. Higher item levels will give slightly higher stats.
  • Developers will tune the stats of certain specializations if they over or underperform. This way, balancing PvP will be much easier and flexible.

Sheilun, Staff of the Mists – Color Variants

“During last pandaren emperor’s reign, a prophecy arose that a ruthless Legion would invade the world of Azeroth and leave it shattered. To save his people, Emperor Shaohao embarked on a series of trials, taking with him the ancient staff Sheilun. Afterwards, he used his newfound wisdom to become part of the land. He made Pandaria into a separate continent and enshrouded it in mist to protect it. His staff clattered to the ground, where it lay until the monks of Tian Monastery found it and took it to the Terrace of Endless Spring for safekeeping…”

The Mistweaver Artifact: Sheilun, Staff of the Mists will come in 20 variants – five archetypes with four color variations. The archetypes, and colors, can be unlocked by different types of achievements and accomplishments, for example reputation gains, PvE content or PvP prestige.

Datamined Spells & Talents

DataminedThe datamining has finally reached the spells and abilities part (apparently, Legion changes are so big, the datamining is taking unusually long). Monks have had so many changes it is hard to know if some spells are merely changed or scrapped all together. Therefore, take this datamine information with a BIG GRAIN OF SALT. And I mean a really big one. The spells might have been past iterations that have been scrapped all together, or have a completely different incarnation in the game once Beta launches for the testers. As Celestalon says:

Tweet - Datamining

Grain of salt, people. Grain of salt…

Note: If a talent says “healing by 0” or “heals for 0”, it is definitely a placeholder number until the actual number have been decided. But all spells will have their numbers changed throughout, in either case.

BETA is launched!

And so is datamining!

Yesterday, we had some foreshadowing on Twitter what was about to come. People believed it to be the Overwatch beta stress test that was foreshadowed, but no! It is beta for Legion, and Wowhead and MMO are well on their way to datamine the beta to pieces. As we like it.

There’s not much on spells yet, but this is what we have seen:

Class Hall – Wandering Isle??

Class Hall.jpg

A map of the Wandering Isle, and a class quest leading to the same zone, has made us pretty certain that our new Class Hall will be in the Wandering Isle. That is thrilling news, since so many of us has requested a way back to the beautiful isle even at max level. Most had guessed Peak of Serenity, but I was holding out on something different. After all, Blizz never stated if class halls will transcend expansion or be a Legion thing. Since it has obvious ties to the artifacts (which we are pretty sure will only be a Legion thing), it is more likely that they would do an order hall that doesn’t interfere too much with old content.

But we still haven’t seen a confirmation that this is the Class Hall, but it is quite likely. For that, I am thrilled to be able to go back to the Wandering Isle! Yay!

Wandering Isle

Class Hall Champions – Li Li and Chen

Li Li Stormstout – Class: Monk, Quest: The Adventure Continues, Zone: The Wandering Isle

  • Born upon the Wandering Isle, Li Li has an insatiable thirst for adventure and exploration. Against the wishes of her father, she left the wandering isle behind to join with her uncle Chen. Together, they traveled the world in search of the homeland of their people, Pandaria. Li Li is both an experianced herbalist and a martial artist who never backs down from a fight.

Chen Stormstout – Class: Monk, Quest: , Zone: The Wandering Isle

Two of our esteemed champions will be Li Li and Chen Stormstout! Not too surprising! We could have guessed that… But I am happy to see familiar faces. I wonder if the Tian Monastery monks will be joining us as well? Or will we leave them in Draenor?

Aysa Cloudsinger and Ji Firepaw must make a return, I think!

New Icons

 inv_staff_2h_artifactshaohao_d_01 inv_staff_2h_artifactshaohao_d_02 inv_staff_2h_artifactshaohao_d_03 inv_staff_2h_artifactshaohao_d_04 inv_staff_2h_artifactshaohao_d_05

Sheilun has apparently separate icons for of the five versions of the staff. I will try to get a hold of all Monk related icons as soon as they’re posted. It’s possible that the majority of them is still in the works however.

Updated will be coming as soon as I learn something new!

Summary of Changes

Legion mistweaver changes.jpg

Are you dizzy with all the new information about Mistweaver changes? Have a hard time keeping track of all the tweets and posts about Legion features? Fear not! As your generous Mistweaver devotee, I have made a whole new page with a summary of all the changes in Legion.

You can find it in:
Mistweaver Guide > Legion Mistweaver Changes

Since I’m so curious what will happen with Mistweavers in Legion, I’m tracking tweets and blog posts about any news regarding the subject. Whenever I find something new, I’ll update the page (and will tweet about the updates as well). Keep the page bookmarked!

Twittering and Progression

While I slave away at various IRL commitments (I won’t bore you with the details), we have had some more updates from @WarcraftDevs on tweetah about our dear Mistweaver spec. In between everything that is going on, my guild finally took down Tyrant Velhari mythic, after way too many tries, of which most were quick resets. RNG is strong in that fight. But on to the news!

New tweets:

Tweet - Sheathing

I have heard some Mistweavers express concern because of this tweet – not all are happy to lose our special staff upside-down sheathing. But if you really thing about it, didn’t most staves look rather strange upside down? I know that the artifact would look rather weird, with all the bells and dangling stuff, floating suspended in the air. I’d think this is a pretty decent update – as long as we keep other weapons such as swords and axes on our back.

Breakfast at Dawn’s Blossom – Design and Bravery

Breakast at Dawn's BlossomFor a week’s period, we have had the privilege to take part of the new Class designs and interact directly with the developers and ask questions. It has come to an end, and I hope that the devs have returned to working on the Beta servers, so we can take part of the complete changes to each class as soon as possible.

Mistweaver’s have had a major overhaul – I’m actually surprised we weren’t mentioned on Blizzcon as one of specs who would get significant changes. With the loss of Fistweaving and some iconic spells such as Soothing Mist, and not to mention Chi, Mistweavers are now fumbling a little over the spec identity. I have no doubt that this will reveal itself once we can take part of the complete changes to the spec, and I will wait impatiently as ever until then. Some people are naturally frustrated over the changes; it can be hard to come to terms with such a deep and significant make-over to our gameplay. But I believe that the changes will be in our favour once we can see the whole picture.

Yesterday I did a small post on the wrinkle of making Mistweavers ranged with melee abilites, and how I hope that the Developers decide to commit to either us being melee or ranged. I still stand by that opinion – but I just want to emphasize that while I do think the new class design needs to polish some of the rough edges, I am overall positive to the changes.

For me, the worst scenario would be to keep Mistweavers as they are, with only minor changes. There are some deep mechanic problems with the spec as it is now (@Suplift wrote a good post on this subject), and leaving them unaddressed would make the Mistweaver spec stagnate. I would always choose to have brave developers making bold decision about class mechanics rather than having the spec stagnate. I am too fond of change and variation to be comfortable with the same old, same old.

Going forward with the Mistweaver identity, I hope it will have its unique flavor while working smoothly with different types of encounters. My personal preference has always been being the mobile healer – it was Chi Torpedo that actually made me fall in love with the spec in the first place. If we had a talent that would be like a healing version of Shadowstep, I would be over the moon. I will definitely miss Fistweaving, and I hope as we go forward we will get a worthy replacement to fill the hole it has left. There is so much yet to discover regarding the Legion changes; I will hold my breath and wait eagerly for the Legion beta. Then I will stick to Mistweaving like white on rice!

Thoughts on Mistweaver’s Ranged Status

After a roller-coaster of tweets back and forth, we finally have some more information regarding the design of Mistweavers in Legion. I have had a chance to absorb the new information and ponder my exact feelings to the new changes, which I will discuss in this post. First, a short summary of how the discussion has passed regarding the subject of Mistweaver’s potential ranged status.

The first notion of the loss of our melee status was stated, slightly ambiguously, in the Monk post. It said:

“We’re also focusing Mistweavers solely on healing, rather than supporting a type of mixed attack-healing gameplay that felt awkward and ultimately didn’t live up to our goals for the spec—it was unintuitive, and chiefly useful as a mana management tool.”

The description implied that the Crane stance was gone, and possibly even our melee abilities. Tweets was sent to @WarcraftDevs to find out what exactly has been changed. They responded:

Tweet - Ranged status

We were in effect ranged healers then. Questions about our DPS rotation were then raised.

Tweet - Melee abilities

Eminence was a confirmed goner, but we had no clarification of how we were supposed to deal damage in raid encounters if we couldn’t stand in melee. We knew healers would get a damage buff, based on this bit of information from Blizzcon:

  • The change you’ll notice in group PvE content is that you will be doing a lot more damage when you chose to spend resources on it.
  • Your damage will be a useful contribution to the raid now.

And this tweet:

Tweet - AoE Damage

We are supposed to be able to deal damage, we have melee spells, but we could be targeted by ranged mechanics. How did that add up? Another bout of tweets sent to the Developers, and here’s the answer:

Tweet - CJL

My Thoughts on the Subject

To be perfectly frank, I was deeply disappointed to learn that our main DPS spell would be Crackling Jade Lightning. Partly, because constantly channeling one spell is not anyone’s idea of fun and engaging gameplay, and partly because we would essentially be locked out from our melee abilities. I’m not only disappointed in this design, but also incredulous to how it came about.

As the design is now, we retain our melee abilities (I would hazard a guess at Jab, Tiger Palm, Blackout Kick and Spinning Crane Kick, though it is still unconfirmed), but we will be effectively discouraged from using these abilities by the risk of endangering the other melees with possible hits of ranged mechanics. No Mistweaver would jeopardize the raid in such a way. As a result, our opportunities would be small to use the melee abilities in PvE settings – it would be completely dependent on each specific encounter design. And unless raid encounters will go through any remarkable changes, that would mean the majority of encounters would lock us out of melee. The new talent Mistwalk would also be unusable in melee, for the same reason.

It seems like poor design to encourage healers to DPS (by bolstering it), give us melee abilities and then so strongly discourage us from using them at all. Instead of having melee status to enable us to safely use our melee abilities, or give us a proper ranged toolkit (and by proper, I mean something more engaging than channeling one single spell), we are stranded somewhere in between, left with unusable abilities and a mindless spamming of Crackling Jade Lightning. Can this truly be the intended design?

In the light of making Holy Paladin into melee instead of Mistweavers, and making Discipline Priests into a hybrid DPS healer instead of Mistweavers, I would hope that the developers give us a properly working toolkit with which we can carve our own niche. Either make Mistweavers properly ranged or properly melee, with appropriate abilities, instead of leaving us somewhere in between, with a toolkit we can’t use.
