My Reaction to Battle for Azeroth

I have finally come home after being gone for who-knows-how long. My living room floors are renovated and my fingers are itching for some writing. Blizzcon was the past weekend and the new WoW expansion has finally been announced! Here are some of my thoughts about the new expansion.

Quick Recap of Battle for Azeroth

After the events of Legion, the two factions will once again take up arms against each other. The rivalry and conflict of the factions will be the focal point in Battle of Azeroth. Here are a few of the new features:

  • Level cap increased to 120.
  • Two new continents available:
    • Kul Tiras for Alliance.
    • Zandalar for Horde.
  • 10 new dungeons.
  • New raids: first one called Uldir, Halls of Control.
  • Island Exploration: new 3-man scenarios.
  • Warfronts: new 20-man events.
  • 6 new allied races:
    • Horde: Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Zandalari Trolls.
    • Alliance: Void Elves, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarves.
  • New artifact: Heart of Azeroth.

Blizzcon Announcements – Future Patches

Buckle up your seat-belts, this will be a spoilery ride. New content has been announced from Blizzcon for many patches ahead, and I’ll be shamelessly delving into it without abandon. If you don’t like to know anything of what’s to come, don’t read this post and put a pillow around your face with a sleeping mask over. You’re gonna need it.

I could recap everything Ion Hazzikostas mentioned in the big reveal of Legion’s future, but then again I am a Monk. I have my monk-colored glasses on and if anyone mentions anything about warriors, water-throwers or tree-huggers, it just filters through like white noise. So, there’s some highlighting on Monk news here, including a brief summary:

Patch 7.1.5 – Minor Patch of Funness

  • Mists of Pandaria Timewalking will be introduced with 6 dungeons.
  • Brawler’s Guilds make a return!
  • Micro-holidays – Azeroth makes way for their own celebrations!
    • Ahn’Qiraj Remembrance Day
    • Volunteer Guard Day
    • Hatching the Hippogryphs
    • Boat Day
  • Blade’s Edge Arena graphics update.
  • Class Updates

Blizzcon Day 2 – Highmaul live raid, cinematics and Q&A

warlords-of-draenor-1920x1200For today’s schedule we saw Method and Midwinter race each other to finish 4 of the bosses in Highmaul WoD raid fastest. We also saw a panel about the WoD cinematics and how the work process looked like, and later a panel with general Q&A.

The raid was definitely the most interesting part. I watched this purely from a healing perspective and my first impression was that it looked a lot of fun. The content seemed challenging but not overly punishing. As promised, we didn’t see the “health bar whiplash” effect as in MoP. The damage pattern looked more like the raid had a bouts of ticking damage, so it was a slower progress down to the like 30-50% health spectrum. The healing process to full health was much slower and it was clear that the healers had to focus some player over the others. When the raid health was back to full it was another bout of ticking damage down to lower health almost immediately. The healers were constantly occupied in other words.

Blizzcon Day 1 – Announcement and News

hämtaFirst day of Blizzcon, and in celebration I’ve corked up my Mohawk Blizzard beer (probably the best porter there is) and watched the whole show online. Today there weren’t too many surprises WoW-wise, but I’ll summarize a little of what was brought up on the WoW panels.

There was one panel about the Warcraft Movie, which we still don’t know much about other than the story will be 50% about the Horde and 50% about the Alliance. We saw some of the actors and they talked a little about the work and characters (Durotan and Orgrim amongst others). Still no trailers though.

On the WoW panel we got a small summary of a lot of things we already knew, but some new things as well. Reduction in CC, ability pruning, item squish and healing gameplay were among the topics that were brought up.
