Introduction to Proving Grounds

Proving Grounds, the place to test and hone your skills. This guide that will help you take your first steps into the arena and all the way to title, if that is your goal. But if your goal is to learn your spec, this is the perfect playground for just that. It is only you, your NPC party and the enemy waves. That is why I call it the Learning Grounds.

Is it your first time? Don not be afraid. Proving Grounds covers the whole spectrum of difficulties and you set the bar yourself. You start off with Bronze, where the most basic knowledge of spells lets you sail through the difficulty. At Silver, you’ll be successful if you have learned how to use your cooldowns. It is not until Gold there are some requirements to learn the encounters in order to be successful. At Endless you will need almost perfect execution and knowledge of the waves to reach the illusive wave 30, that earns you the title Proven Healer.

Why Proving Grounds?
There are several reasons why you should do Proving Grounds. You have to complete the Silver difficulty to unlock Heroic Dungeons, of course. Beyond that, it is an experience of self-improvement that I warmly recommend.

  • Unlocks Heroic Dungeons when completed Silver Difficulty.
  • Unlocks the title Proven Healer when completed Wave 30 of Endless Difficulty.
  • Gives you a solitary place to learn and improve your skills as a Mistweaver.
  • Progressing Endless will teach you how to triage heal, and gives you the opportunity to find you healer nerves.
  • A fantastic place to test your new UI!

Preparing Your Mistweaver

Monk Battle StandardIn Warlords of Draenor, Proving Grounds scale to your item level. Your set bonuses and gems will be turned off, meaning that you could easily clear Proving Grounds in the gear you are most familiar with. But you want it to be at least ilvl 615 (PG doesn’t scale lower than that). Enchants still work, so make sure to have your best enchants applied to your gear.

There are several things you can do to prepare your Mistweaver for the upcoming trial. I would recommend that you peruse the following guide closely if your goal is Gold or Endless difficulty. Bronze and Silver are tuned so that you can simply walk in and do the trial without too much preparation or trouble.

Talents

Tier 1;
Tier 2; ability_monk_forcesphereZen Sphere
Tier 3; ability_monk_chibrewChi Brew
Tier 4; ability_monk_legsweepLeg Sweep (ability_monk_chargingoxwaveCharging Ox Wave for Endless (30))
Tier 5; spell_monk_diffusemagicDiffuse Magic
Tier 6; ability_monk_summontigerstatueInvoke Xuen, the White Tiger
Tier 7; ability_monk_chiexplosion_newChi Explosion

In the first tier it doesn’t matter too much which talent you chose. Tiger’s Lust is also good but in PG I always try to keep the number of buttons to press to a minimum. Zen Sphere is the best choice in the second tier, simply because it can dish out a large amount of damage as well as healing.

Leg Sweep is a 5 sec stun instead of the 3 sec Charging Ox Wave provides. It has a 15 second longer cooldown, instead of Charging Ox Wave’s 30 sec. Charging Ox Wave is a bit better in Endless though since it can easily interrupt all Flamecallers in wave 8.

Diffuse Magic is a given since it can dispel Aqua Bomb, a.k.a. saving you a Detox. At tier 6, you can choose between Xuen or Chi Torpedo (RJW costs too much mana). I’ve always preferred Xuen since the burst healing is sorely needed on some waves! Chi Torpedo does good healing and damage, but it can lock you away from healing when you need it most.

Chi Explosion is the best choice in the last tier. Use it for AoE healing whenever it is needed, but use Enveloping Mist when the tank is taking heavy damage (or you need to single-target burst other NPCs). You can precast Chi Explosion to generate the Healing Spheres, and then use Detonate Chi to create a powerful burst.

Glyphs

Glpyh of Detox 2Glyph of Detox (Glyph of DetoxingGlyph of Detoxing for Endless (30))
Glyph of Surging MistGlyph of Surging Mist

Possibly;
Glyph of Soothing MistGlyph of Soothing Mist
Glyph of Touch of DeathGlyph of Touch of Death

Detox is always a good healing bonus, but Detoxing is worth more in wave 4 at Endless when you have two debuffs active at the same time. Surging Mist is good if you use Crane Stance on occasion, otherwise it is replaceable. The other glyphs allows more mobility and Touch of Death is nice to have if you don’t want to spend Chi on the spell.

Gear

Gearing is a non-issue if your goal is only to do Bronze, Silver and Gold. For Endless however, you want to make things go as smoothly as possible to be able to defeat the harder waves. A separate Proving Grounds set is not a bad thing then. There are some principles you should follow:

  • Proving Grounds is balanced for 615 ilvl gear. It will scale up if you have higher ilvl, but the balancing usually makes the scenario much harder than at ilvl 615.
  • You can get 615 ilvl from Normal dungeons, and sometimes from Garrison missions.
  • Proving Grounds tracks both your ilvl and spell power. Do not try to cheat by having 615 gear and then a 680 weapon – it will not become any easier.
  • Gems are turned off.
  • Tertiary stats are turned off.
  • Set bonuses are turned off.
  • Enchants work – so make sure to get the best of what’s available!
  • Use the Mark of the Shadowmoon weapon enchant.
  • Spirit trinkets are preferred!

As for stat weights, the normal Spirit>Intellect>Multistrike>Crit>Haste works like a charm below wave 30. But if you want to make hard progression above wave 30, you have to go with much more Haste. Remember that with every wave in Endless, the enemies’ damage is increased by 1%. Wave 30% does 30% more damage, and so on. At higher waves, the enemies hit so hard that you need to constantly top up the party to prevent them from dying by the next attack. Speed is everything!

Buffs

When you enter the scenario, you will automatically get all the raiding buffs. There are two buffs you can apply, and should do for progression:

Greater Draenic Intellect Flask Greater Draenic Intellect Flask (250 Intellect)
Salty Squid Rolls Salty Squid Roll (125 Multistrike) or
Pickled Eel Pickled Eel (125 Critical Strike)

The Arena

The Arena with Raid markers set out
The Arena with Raid markers set out

This is the Arena of Annihilation. It has quite an ominous name, but don’t let that affect you. If you are aiming at the title, this will probably feel like home after a while. At least it did for me after spending so much time there!

In Proving Grounds you will face enemy waves that spawn at predictable places for a certain period of time. At Bronze you will meet 5 waves, at Silver 8, Gold is 10 and Endless is of course endless. These waves are not random – the same wave always have the same set of enemies and always spawn at the same place. Below is a map of the spawning places (where SquareSquare is spawn place for your party).

Proving Grounds Map
The map of Proving Grounds – with world markers.

Notice that I have marked each spawn place with a raid marker. When I enter the Arena I place the corresponding world markers in their respective places. This is to help you orientate more easily in the room (the symmetry can be quite confusing in the middle of the fight).

At Gold and Endless, the waves spawn across the room and you’ll need to stand at the spawn place before it spawns. This is to interrupt initial casts that can potentially lower your party health a substantial amount. At Bronze and Silver the waves only spawn at Skull and Cross, which means you do not have to worry about it.

In the difficulty sections you’ll find where each wave spawn, the wave time duration and what set of enemies you’ll be facing.

Your Team

Team

These are the inglorious basterds you are supposed to heal.

  • Oto the Protector – Warrior (middle)
  • Kavan the Arcanist –Mage (left)
  • Ki the Assassin – Rogue (stealthed)
  • Sooli the Survivalist – Hunter (right)
  • Oh and Speedy, his turtle pet

Oto is the tank and he will be requiring most of your healing. When he gets below a certain health percentage he’ll pop a defensive cooldown. You’ll know this because he’ll be shouting “I am a wall of iron, but I cannot hold out much longer”. Oto pops his defensive cooldown automatically if a Conqueror enrages, unless it is on cooldown.

Ki and Kavan will be helping on the interrupts (albeit a bit randomly). They are also the main culprits of fire-standing. They love standing in fire! Kavan also love standing in melee despite being a range class. She does however provide Time Warp.

Sooli mostly stands at range where he first spawned, and will not move unless he needs to. Try to always remain in range of him, though.

Since Proving Grounds scale to your item level and spell power, a number of things scale with it. This include both enemy and party health and damage. These are the percentages of party health;

You 100 %
Oto 85% of your health
Kavan 51% of your health
Ki 55% of your health
Sooli 55% of your health

The numbers are not exact and you’ll likely see variations of it depending on your item level and health. But note that the DPSers will be easiest to heal to full health, while yourself will be the hardest. This ties in to one of the debuffs the enemies apply (see Tunneler).

The Enemies

There are 6 types of enemies and they come in small and large versions. The large versions simply do more damage and have higher priority.

Illusionary Ripper

Illusionary RipperThis guy will not do anything more exciting than melee damage. It is pretty moderate but it can mount up to be quite substantial when they gang up on Oto. Curiously, it is the only add that can be feared and CCed. ability_monk_paralysisParalysis and spell_monk_ringofpeaceRing of Peace will work on them in other words, but that is the only enemy it is effective on.

If Rippers are the only adds left, you can feel safe to finish them off in Crane stance, since their damage will not amount to much. In hard progression in Endless mode, any Mana Tea stacks you can get (through spending Chi) is worth the time and energy.

Illusionary Flamecaller

Illusionary FlamecallerFlamecaller is caster that always start the fight with the spell Invoke LavaInvoke Lava. This is a channelled spell that spew out lava spots all over the ground. Standing in them means a stacking debuff that makes you take more damage. Don’t let him even do a fraction of this spell since your party member are grossly incompetent in avoiding the pools. Stand at the spawn point and interrupt it directly.

After casting Invoke Lava, the add focuses on only casting FireballFireball, if it is the Small version, and PyroblastPyroblast, if it is the Large version of the add. The spells target random party members. Fireball does minimal damage while Pyroblast can knock off a huge chunk of HP. Both are interruptible and unless you have a Hive-Singer up that takes priority, use all your interrupts on this enemy.

Invoke LavaInvoke Lava
1 sec cast, Interruptible
Summons globs of lava around the caster. The lava will burn friendly and enemy units standing on it every 1 sec and inflicts Fire damage plus additional Fire damage over 5 sec, and increase all damage taken by 2%. Stacks up to 20 times.

FireballFireball
1 sec cast, Interruptible
Inflicts moderate Fire damage to an enemy. Only cast by Small Illusionary Flamecaller.

PyroblastPyroblast
2 sec cast, Interruptible
Inflicts heavy Fire damage to an enemy. Only cast by Large Illusionary Flamecaller.

Illusionary Hive-Singer

Illusionary Hive-SingerHive-Singers have one spell you need to watch out for; Sonic BlastSonic Blast. This spell is an AoE that lowers your entire party health and it needs to be interrupted! The cast is very fast which means it can be good to have an interrupt macro set for this specific enemy. The large Hive-Singers can KO your raid very easily if you let too many casts go through. The small ones are negligible but don’t let that stop you from interrupting them. Every bit of mana you can save counts.

If too many casts go through, don’t heal the party with Uplift since it does so little healing compared to the cost. Use instead Chi Explosion coupled with Detonate Chi to burst heal your team. You can spot heal Sooli (hunter) since he’s out of range. I usually cast Xuen on the Hive-Singers since he will eminence heal everyone while killing the Hive-Singer faster.

Sonic BlastSonic Blast
1.25 sec cast, Interruptible

Blasts enemies within 40 yards dealing damage.

Illusionary Aqualyte

Illusionary Aqualyte 2Aqualytes place a debuff on a random party member, called Aqua BombAqua Bomb. If this debuff is not dispelled it will blow up and deal damage to anyone in the vicinity. Aqua Bomb should and must be dispelled! They only place one debuff at a time so as long as you keep an eye out for it, you will be fine. Glyph of Detox is very nice for this purpose, unless you do Endless where you will meet two Aqualytes in wave 4. Then you will need Glyph of Detoxing.

Besides the debuff, they do heavy tank damage. When these are up you know you will have to focus the tank. Do your strong single-target heals on the tank to counter this, and if you do not need the AoE stun for the other adds, use it on these.

Aqua BombAqua Bomb
Instant, Debuff
Applies an Aqua Bomb to the target, causing them to take damage every second, and after 6 sec causes them to explode, dealing damage to those nearby.

Illusionary Tunneler

Illusionary TunnelerThis enemy will occasionally BurrowBurrow himself into the ground and then jump up on a random party member, placing the debuff ChompChomp on the target. Chomp does ticking damage and the only way to get rid of it is to heal the target to 90+ % health. This needs to be cleared as soon as possible otherwise the target constantly take damage and it will act as a huge mana sinkhole.

A ability_monk_thunderfocusteaThunder Focus Tea buffed ability_monk_surgingmistSurging Mist is very effective way to get rid of it, especially if the tank gets it while being meleed. If other members of the party get it and you feel you have time, it is possible to simply use Soothing Mist to get rid of it. Otherwise, use Enveloping Mist while Soothing. The DPSers are the easiest to clear Chomp off since they have the lowest health pool.

BurrowBurrow
0.8 sec cast
Burrows under the ground to a target, dealing damage to them when they arrive.

ChompChomp
Debuff
Chomps on an enemy, dealing damage and an additional damage every 0.5 sec. Removed when the target’s health goes above 90%.

Illusionary Conqueror

Illusionary ConquerorConquerors do very high tank damage. They will also EnrageEnrage and double in size while hammering away at your tank. When Conquerors Enrage, the tank is going to need Life Cocoon and a lot of love! Keep an eye on them and be prepared when you see them cast Enrage, which they do roughly 15 seconds after they spawn. Enrage lasts 10 seconds.

Some waves spawn two Conquerors, in addition to other adds. If you have to leave your attention from the tank even for a second, make sure to apply spell_monk_envelopingmistEnveloping Mist before doing so. Always be prepared with Chi if this is a possible scenario!

EnrageEnrage
1 sec cast
Enrages, freeing from and providing immunity to movement impairing and loss of control effects, increasing movement speed by 100%, increasing damage dealt by 150%, and increasing attack speed by 25% for 10 sec.

Proving Grounds WeakAura Trackers

PG Trackers

Recommended skinning addon: Masque and Masque: Trinity

This tracker will only pop up when you are inside Proving Grounds. It’s optimized for doing Endless, as it shows Charging Ox Wave, Xuen and Chi Explosion trackers (the latter is a simple chi trackers that lights up at 4 Chi, when you are in Crane stance).
