Gold Strategy

This page is written for patch 6.2

An update for patch 7.0 will be here soon™

If you haven’t yet read up on how to prepare your character head over to the Preparation Guide to Proving Grounds. There you can study up on talent and glyph choices, the arena, your party and most importantly; the enemies.

Proving Grounds Map

Clear time; 10min

Wave 1; SkullSkull (Duration; 0:35)

  • Large Illusionary Flamecaller
  • Small Illusionary Ripper

Wave strategy; An easy start that should not give you any problems. When the wave timer gets closer to zero, prepare yourself for the next wave by standing at cross. If you feel brave, you can help kill the adds in Crane stance.

Wave 2; CrossCross (Duration; 0:45)

  • Large Illusionary Aqualyte
  • Small Illusionary Hive-Singer

Wave strategy; If the previous wave is still active, the rogue will not interrupt the Hive-singer and the task will fall on you. Use ability_monk_spearhandSpear Hand Strike or ability_monk_legsweepLeg Sweep to interrupt the Hive-Singer during this wave. ability_rogue_imrovedrecuperateDetox all Aqua BombAqua Bombs when they appear.

Wave 3; SkullSkull (Duration; 0:40)

  • Small Illusionary Hive-Singer
  • Small Illusionary Tunneler
  • Small Illusionary Ripper

Wave strategy; Once again, stand ready at the spawn place and interrupt the Hive-Singer if needed, followed by ability_monk_summontigerstatueXuen. Be ready with 3 chi when ChompChomp appears on an ally and quickly get rid of it with ability_monk_soothingmistsSoothing Mist + spell_monk_envelopingmistEnveloping Mist, or possibly a ability_monk_thunderfocusteaThunder Focus Tea buffed ability_monk_surgingmistSurging Mist.

Wave 4; CrossCross (Duration; 0:55)

  • Large Illusionary Flamecaller
  • Large Illusionary Tunneler
  • Small Illusionary Ripper

Wave strategy; Flamecaller initial cast needs to be interrupter AS SOON AS HE SPAWNS. If he casts Invoke LavaInvoke Lava unhindered, there will be pools of lava on the floor that your allies most likely will step in it and take damage. Do not let that happen. Be ready to burst heal if an ally get both PyroblastPyroblast and ChompChomp at the same time.

Wave 5A; SkullSkull (Duration; 1:05)

  • Large Illusionary Aqualyte
  • Small Illusionary Tunneler

Wave 5B; CrossCross (Spawns at 0:50)

  • Large Illusionary Hive-Singer
  • Small Illusionary Flamecaller

Wave strategy; If you have people topped off for this wave, the initial ChompChomp can easily be healed. Be ready for heavy tank damage from the Aqualyte. When the Flamecaller spawn, interrupt him immediately. When the Hive-Singer is active, use ability_monk_chiexplosion_newChi Explosion, and if needed also use ability_monk_healthsphereDetonate Chi to heal you closest allies if Sonic BlastSonic Blasts get through. Remember to interrupt!

Wave 6; CircleCircle (Duration; 0:55)

  • Small Illusionary Ripper
  • Large Illusionary Conqueror
  • Small Illusionary Ripper

Wave strategy; This wave has high tank damage (and the Hive-Singer from the previous wave is still around a bit longer). Focus the tank and cast ability_monk_chicocoonLife Cocoon when the Conqueror EnrageEnrages.

Wave 7; SkullSkull (Duration; 1:05)

  • Large Illusionary Tunneler
  • Small Illusionary Conqueror
  • Small Illusionary Hive-Singer

Wave strategy; Be ready to interrupt the Hive-Singer and handle ChompChomp when it appears. Make sure to cast ability_monk_summontigerstatueXuen on the Hive-Singer.

Wave 8; CrossCross (Duration; 1:05)

  • Large Illusionary Flamecaller
  • Small Illusionary Conqueror

Wave strategy; Relatively easy wave. Just have everyone topped up for the next one.

Wave 9A;  TriangleTriangle (Duration; 1:20)

  • Large Illusionary Conqueror
  • Small Illusionary Flamecaller

Wave 9B;  StarStar (Spawn at 1:05)

  • Small Illusionary Hive-Singer
  • Small Illusionary Aqualyte

Wave strategy; This is the hard wave. Note that the waves spawn at different places than the usual. Place yourself accordingly and interrupt the Flamecaller. Be ready with ability_monk_chicocoonLife Cocoon on the tank when EnrageEnrage is activate on the Conqueror. You have 15 seconds before the next part-wave spawn. Place your statue at Square, that’s where you’ll meet up. Do not run too far though, your tank will take heavy damage and will need your attention.

The damage will be quite high overall and I recommend to use spell_monk_revivalRevival to counter that.

Wave 10A;  CircleCircle (Duration; 1:30)

  • Large Illusionary Conqueror
  • Small Illusionary Tunneler

Wave 10B;  MoonMoon (Spawn at 1:10)

  • Small Illusionary Flamecaller
  • Small Illusionary Aqualyte

Wave 10C;  DiamondDiamond (Spawn at 0:50)

  • Small Illusionary Conqueror
  • Small Illusionary Hive-Singer

Wave strategy; Focus the tank since it will be quite heavy damage when the Conqueror EnrageEnrages. Cast ability_monk_summontigerstatueXuen as the next adds appear and keep focusing tank. The Conqueror will probably manage a second Enrage while the Hive-singer is up. ability_monk_chicocoonLife Cocoon will be off cooldown by then.

Strategy Breakdown

This difficulty is significantly harder than Silver. The 9th and 10th waves spawn all over the arena while you will have Sonic Blasts to take care of while the tank takes heavy damage. It is more vital than ever to interrupt the Hive-Singers. Create a macro to easily interrupt them even when it is hectic. The new enemies are Tunneler and Conqueror. Read up on them in the enemy section of the Preparation guide.

Spell Strategy

  • If you can manage, try to use cheap spells like ability_monk_soothingmistsSoothing Mist as often as possible.
  • Use ability_monk_renewingmistsRenewing Mist, ability_monk_expelharmExpel Harm and ability_monk_forcesphereZen Sphere on CD.
  • Always place your ability_monk_summonserpentstatueJade Serpent Statue close to the group.
  • For heavier single-target damage use spell_monk_envelopingmistEnveloping Mist or a ability_monk_thunderfocusteaThunder Focus Tea charged ability_monk_surgingmistSurging Mist.
  • For heavier AoE damage, use ability_monk_chiexplosion_newChi Explosion in melee clump (ability_monk_healthsphereDetonate Chi for burst) and spot heal the rest (Do not use ability_monk_upliftUplift, since it has limited efficency).

Cooldown Strategy

  • Cast ability_monk_summontigerstatueXuen on the Hive-singers in the designated waves.

  • Dispel Aqualytes’ Aqua BombAqua Bombs before they explode.
  • Aqualytes do heavy tank damage, focus Oto when they’re up.
  • Focus ChompChomp-affected targets and get rid of the debuff as soon as it is up. Either with
    • ability_monk_soothingmistsSoothing Mist and spell_monk_envelopingmistEnveloping Mist.

  • When Conquerors EnrageEnrage, use ability_monk_chicocoonLife Cocoon on tank on the designated waves.

And keep trying until you get there!
