New PvP Page!

I’m stuck in PvP swamp. Which is incredibly fun as a Mistweaver! I’ve set my eyes on high prestige levels to get all the artifact looks and mounts, which resulted in a lot of battleground popping. Since there is very little out there about PvP, I thought I’d write down the little knowledge I have (hence the ‘Basic’ in the name). Hopefully, it’ll help you get started!

Mistweaver Guide > Basic PvP Mistweaving

Admittedly, there are tremendously many great Mistweavers out there that are so much better at me at PvP. However, not much knowledge is written down to easy-to-read guides. For the ones that just need a basic overview, this guide is a great start!

PvP in Alpha – Developer Notes

Since the latest deployed alpha build, PvP has been enabled on the new level 110 PvP realm. Players are able to test out the honor talents and get a feel for the new progression system. Due to weird time zones, queue times have been horrible when I’ve tried, so no luck for me yet. However, Brian Holinka has shared some developer thoughts on the new system!

Here’s a few quick facts to refresh your memory about Legion PvP:

  • Players will have a separate, additional, talent tree for PvP.
  • To unlock the talents, you must gain Honor first, which works more like PvP experience.
  • To unlock the respective talents, you must earn:
    • Levels 1-10: 750 honor
    • Levels 11-20: 875 honor
    • Levels 21-30: 1000 honor
    • Levels 31-40: 1125 honor
    • Levels 41-50: 1250 honor
  • Once on max honor level, you can reset your honor level to gain a Prestige level. Prestige levels can unlock cosmetic rewards.
  • Your gear has less impact in Legion PvP. You have predesignated stats when entering PvP battle, meaning that all stats from your gear, set-bonuses and trinkets are disabled in PvP.
  • Item level can boost your predesignated stats, but only a little. 25 ilvls difference means a 2.5% increase in stats, as opposed to in Warlords of Draenor where it would have meant a 25% increase.
  • Since stats are predesignated, developers can tweak individual specs in a way they haven’t before, making PvP balancing easier.

PvP and Talents in Legion

Pvp in legionAn easily overlooked aspect of the recent Legion datamine is the new PvP talent tree! I mean sure, who does PvP anyway? I have only dabbled in it from time to time, but never anything serious. So why should we care…?

In fact, in Legion the whole PvP system will be reworked, pretty much from the ground up. The new philosophy is the reduce the significance of gear and instead emphasize talent choice and skill. The Developers have reworked the system so that they have superior tools to balance class and spec against each other in a way they never could before. Oh and, there will be new epic rewards, such as Artifact transmogs! If I’m not mistaken, the Serpent version of Sheilun will be tied to the PvP system somehow. That’s enough to make me consider trying PvP. So let’s go through what we know so far, shall we?

Quick Facts

  • Players are given a separate PvP level, called Honor level. Max level is 50.
  • To gain levels and unlock talents in the PvP talent tree, players must gain Honor, which works more like experience in Legion.
  • The more Honor levels a player gain, the more choice is unlocked in in the PvP talent tree.
  • Players can “consume” their Honor levels to get a Prestige Rank. Higher prestige ranks grant cosmetic awards, such as Artifact transmog, titles, character portraits, mounts etc.
  • Once Honor levels are consumed for Prestige, the player goes back to Honor level 1, giving the player the opportunity to gain Honor levels again, and reach for another Prestige rank.
  • PvP in Legion will be much more about talent choice than gear.
  • There is no PvP specific gear: no resilience, no PvP power or gear with secondary PvP item level.
  • You can enter PvP with any type of gear; your stats will be based on your specialization. Higher item levels will give slightly higher stats.
  • Developers will tune the stats of certain specializations if they over or underperform. This way, balancing PvP will be much easier and flexible.

My PvP Adventure

The past weeks I have had a try at PvPing as a Mistweaver. It has been an adventure and I have lots to tell. But first I want to give you some background: I have always been a bad pvper. Or at least the few times I have tried it. My first time was back in vanilla, when I played as a Rogue. Though I wasn’t good, I had fun at least. But mind you, this was the time when some people said that Rogues should have spirit on their gear so they could regen faster when stealthed. Different times, different times.

My second attempt at PvP was back in Cataclysm. I progressed PvE as a Protection Paladin, then tried my hand at PvP as a Retribution Paladin. Experienced PvPers from the time know that Paladins weren’t great, and I agree. Retradins only hurt when they popped their cooldowns, and everyone knew that. So once I popped my cooldowns, I was either purged or stunned till no tomorrow. My attempts at arena were dismal, and a little worse than that.

After my failed attempts as Retri, my only experience of PvP have been World PvP, which often isn’t fun for the PvE player since we have zero gear in that department. Timeless Isle was notorious, and often PvE players couldn’t even be there because they got one-shotted by arena-geared players. That was the time when I seriously thought about transferring to a PvE realm. But it would have meant leaving my guild and all my friends, so I rejected the idea.
